Montana's High Divide Agreement is being celebrated as a successful partnership between trail user groups. The agreement provides the Helena trails community with a combination of land protection and recreation opportunities.
Recently, Anna Laxague and Jason Wells, of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, were on hand to participate in the event that kicked off the new trail construction. Anna and Jason joined members of the Backcountry Horsemen, the Montana Wilderness Association, the Wilderness Society and the local mountain bike community to break ground on 13 miles of new trail that will be open to mountain bikes as part of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). This collaborative effort will eventually yield 50 miles of loops for mountain bikers, hikers and equestrians.
The work was a true backcountry trailwork experience, supported by the Backcountry Horsemen who carted in the day's food supplies, cooked meals and even shared a little whiskey around the campfire after eight hours of work in lovely, albeit occasionally snowy, autumn conditions. The weekend was an ambitious and inspiring start to a great trail project. Hopefully the spirit of cooperation and compromise will continue to spread, affording even greater trails opportunities in Montana and worldwide.
Don't forget, The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew will be back on the CDT September 27 for a workday on the Monarch Crest Trail in Salida, CO.
