Help Protect Mountain Biking at Catskill Park

The new Catskill Park State Land Draft Master Plan includes several improvements that will protect and enhance mountain biking. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) needs your support if these bike-friendly provisions are to be included in the final plan.

One of DEC's best policies is the new Primitive Bicycle Corridor, which will allow continued riding in wild lands. Mountain bikers will maintain access to important connector trails between communities and larger backcountry loops through the park.

Mountain bikers need to support this clear understanding of bicycling as a quiet, human-powered, low-impact activity compatible with wild and undeveloped areas.

Take Action! Tell DEC you support their bike-friendly policies in Catskill Park. The deadline for comments is May 19, 2008.

Additional information, including a copy of the draft plan, is available online.

Tell State Parks to Improve Trail Opportunities

IMBA urges New York mountain bikers to complete a State Parks online survey about their park experiences. State Parks manages several good trails, but there is room for substantial improvements across the state.

Talking Points

  • Please improve trail maps and signage to better show trails specifically marked and designed for mountain biking.
  • Please improve bicycle access at my favorite parks. (Provide specific locations.)
  • Parks around the country know mountain biking can help improve visitation, volunteer stewardship and tourism-based local economies.
  • Scientific studies have shown the environmental impacts of bicycling are similar to hiking and far less than other uses.
  • Please promote broad trails communities by implementing equitable trail access policies for all user groups. State Parks are public lands that should be enjoyed by all non-motorized users, including bicyclists.
